"This Cold War With You......"

What an odd title for a blog, eh? If you are curious where I came up with it, the answer is that it comes from an old, forgotten song during the Cold War era entitled This Cold War With You. The song had nothing to do with the Cold War at all. Instead, it was a song about a romantic relationship that was dying and the relationship was becoming a small scale Cold War between the two parties.

Trust me, the song is better than you'd think and it also shows how the Cold War had permeated itself into the psyche of the American, European, Asian and Russian mind. For 70 years, the Cold War was essentially what dominated the domestic and international policies of very country in the world. Yet, for many people the Cold War has become a footnote. Or, worse, a forgotten footnote.

So why a blog about the Cold War? This is clearly not an academic blog but rather a labor of love. Why the dedication to this subject matter?

Growing up in through the 1980's I remember how the final decade of the Cold War permeated into the American landscape. No, it was not as scary as he 1950's or 1960's...but the 1980's were serious as Ronald Reagan made it a point to directly challenge and confront the Soviets. The 1980's were the end game and they were fascinating times to live through. I can remember how it played out on television through the news, through PBS documentary series such as COMRADES and even on an episode of THE WHITE SHADOW. Does anyone remember the very shortlived sitcom about a Russian immigrant titled OH, MICKEY? (No, not the song..the sitcom) How about the notoriously funny Wedny's commercial that featured a Soviet fashion show? Or the Robin Williams film MOSCOW ON THE HUDSON?

Yes, the Cold War permeated every aspect of our popular culture. So, let's relive the Cold War from a different perspective shall we...
