For those of you who may not be familiar with the history of the Soviet Union (and, sadly, there are many not familiar with the history of the Soviet Union as it is generally not taught in schools below the university level and even those who attend university who are taught th history of Russia and Soviet Union are very limited in numbers) Georgia was once a "member" of the Soviet Union prior to its independence. It would seem that certain feelings of irredentism (the desire for regaining lost territory) is alive and well among certain hard line members of the Russian government.
