I was always a huge fan of the space race and enjoy collecting nostalgia from an era when astronauts were considered major American heroes. But it was the launch of Sputnik by the USSR that launched (pardon the pun) the space race. It also brought in a great wave of fear due to the potential threat of nuclear missiles traveling from space. Thanks to Youtube here is some early, vintage 1957 footage of the Sputnik Launch.
