Here is a short and interesting item that has come out of Moscow. It would seem that there are attempts in Russia to realign the old oil deals that the country had with Iraq prior to the outbreak of the US-Iraq War. (Russia, France and other countries lost their oil deals when Hussein's government collapsed after the US victory in Iraq) You can read more about it here in the Moscow Times. On a side note, weren't a multitude of the oil deals Iraq had with a number of these countries that were in violation of the UN sanctions?

As much as we hate to admit it, the fact remains that the economy is not doing so well and it is pretty difficult to ignore that there is a credit crunch that has led to a number of people racking up bad credit ratings. I was recently listening to an audio book about World War II and there was a section on it where it was discussed that Hitler wished to invade Russia in order to acquire its vast agricultural resources. This provided a unique insight into the fact that the German powers to be understood that their political system would never support feeding for the population for any amount of time. (The Third Reich's economic policies were crackpot to say the least)  This section of the audiobook only covered Hitler's interest in Germany in a very brief manner but it got me interested in  learning more about the USSR's  involvement  in World War Two.  Maybe that will be a series of special features in this blog. Actually, it will be a huge  a special feature....just let me do a little  research on the subject.

Two of my favorite books about the Cold War are THE COLD WAR: A MILITARY HISTORY and THE COLD WAR: A HISTORY by Martin Walker. Since my Military History book is in storage right now I am only going to plug Walker's book. Granted, there are certain things in Walker's book I disagree with I have to say that this particular book provides an excellent time line of events from the beginning of the Cold War (actually, it covers a number of events proceeding the Cold War and some events after it) that can provide a complete novice to the subject with a clear overview of the events that occurred during the 20th century or, more accurately, defined the 20th Century. As the Cold War drifts further and further in history books such as this become more and more important. It is well worth purchasing.

It is no secret that Russia oil and natural gas are the reason why it has experienced a resurgence on the world scene. I thought this was kind of funny but it looks like someone got the bright idea to erect a statue of Putin (probably Putin came up with the idea) in a town square. (You can read about it at the Moscow Times) Look, if somebody wants to put up a statue of Putin hey more power to them. But the guy isn't retired yet…you would think that they would wait until he calls it a career. Then again, you wouldn't want him to be too old to enjoy the big ole' pile of self aggrandizement that a statue would provide.
